Women in technology

Women are under-represented in the fields of engineering, technology, science and mathematics. These fields change the way we live – but they need more women and people of colour to help create new developments that serve all of society, not just a small segment.
Our female students, staff and alumni are proving they can play key roles in these male dominated fields. We also run programmes for high school and primary school students so we can inspire more girls to get into these fields.

GirlBoss

GirlBoss was founded to inspire, empower and equip New Zealand girls to become the changemakers of the future. They encourage girls to embrace male-dominated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) fields, develop their leadership and entrepreneurial skills, connect with like-minded youth, and aid and enable their communities.

AUT STEM Women

AUT STEM Women is a Facebook group run by students which aims to encourage and support women studying in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) courses by helping them develop networking skills and succeed in their field of study. They focus on bringing together driven women from different backgrounds and positions to form a tight community within the university and also get connected with women working in the industry.

Programming Challenge for Girls (PC4G

PC4G is an annual one day event to introduce junior high school girls to computer programming, no experience necessary. The event originated at AUT in 2008, and since then has become international, with sites all around New Zealand and the world.
